Bidding Farewell to Arms
In Bidding Farewell To Arms by Roman Skaskiw, the introduction paragraph is introduced with a question. "Are you still in the army" is the conflict in this story because Roman is very indecisive in what to do after coming back home from the war. He is unsure about going back to Afghanistan or staying in Iowa. Roman uses a lot of vivid details to make his story not only interesting but easy to read and understand. He focuses on expressing his feelings towards almost everything. Towards the end of Roman's story he tells the reader that "life is a privilege" and that responsibility is what keeps us alive in this world. He appreciates his years in the military for showing him adventure and responsibility. He ends his story by telling the reader that "i hereby tender my unqualified resignation".
Lydia's Story
In Lydia's Story by Jan Brideau, the author introduces a character named Lydia. The author introduces the main character by saying "Let's call her Lydia". I found it weird that the author introduced the character like that because it makes it seem that she's unsure of her real name. The setting of this story takes place in Louisiana. The author met Lydia at a local shelter and upon arriving to the shelter there was a toxic gas that got released all over the shelter. Causing two elderly patients to receive medical attention. One of the patients was Lydia. Jan was directed to help Lydia and that's when they officially met. Lydia ends up telling her life story about how she lived in New Orleans and was a victim of the "first storm". Jan's main point of writing Lydia's story is to share the hope and determination Lydia has had throughout her struggles.
Literacy: A Lineage
In Literacy: A Lineage by Melanie Lucken the author introduces her passion of reading and writing and the person she calls her "literacy guardian". Melanie's literacy guardian is her father. She writes about the great bond her and her father have. From riding bikes to reading poems and books together. She quotes the poem her and her dad would read together at the bottom of a bell tower. She cites the poem by italicizing it and telling us that Henry Wadsworth Longfellow wrote the poem. Melanie writes her story with a lot of imagery and details. Towards the end of the story, Melanie creates her own definition of literacy and her appreciation towards her father. Melanie main point of writing this story is to share how much she loves literature and how her father plays a big part in her life.
